Doodh App
Kerala's First Digital Platform for 3 Lakh+ Dairy Farmers
The Dairy Legacy & The Challenge
Dairy farming is a vital pillar of Kerala's rural economy, supporting lakhs of households. However, the operational process inside local dairy co-operative societies was stuck in the paper age. Cooperative societies relied on an archaic legacy desktop application called Ksheera for logging daily milk collections.
Farmers had absolutely no digital communication link. Quality metrics—specifically fat and Solid-Not-Fat (SNF) percentages—were logged in manual notebooks. This lack of transparency led to frequent payment calculation disputes, opaque accounting, and delayed weekly payouts, creating substantial financial anxieties for Wayanad's dairy communities.
Field Insights & Design Decisions
Our design process started with field research in Wayanad. We visited milk collection centers, interviewed cooperative secretaries, and mapped the daily routines of farmers. While digital literacy among older cow farmers was low, we noticed they were highly comfortable using WhatsApp.
This key insight drove our UX strategy: rather than creating high-density dashboards, we built a radical, receipt-focused interface that replicates the familiar format of traditional printed bills. We simplified complex charts into clear list records showing milk transactions, animal feed debits, and veterinary doctor request statuses.

The Farmer Mobile Interface
The mobile app was engineered specifically for ease of use, with large tap targets, high contrast elements, and a design pattern adapted to Malayalam.

Key Mobile Features
- Live Collection Records: Real-time alerts as soon as milk is weighed and fat is tested at the society.
- Empathy-focused Bill Layouts: Receipt designs modeled after local physical paper receipts to aid readability.
- Offline Sync Architecture: Data is stored locally and syncs automatically when the user moves into mobile network range.
- Digital Ledger: Transparent records of milk sale income, cattle feed purchases, and veterinary advance balances.
The Web Dashboard for Societies
To manage thousands of farmers and coordinate collections, we designed a comprehensive desktop web dashboard for society secretaries and administrative staff.

Key Web Dashboard Features
- CSV Import Parser: An smart drag-and-drop CSV translator that parses legacy desktop database outputs into live JSON objects.
- Bulk SMS Integration: Instantly sends text alerts to farmers' basic mobile phones for maximum inclusion.
- Collection Trend Analytics: Charts to monitor cooperative collection metrics, quality metrics (fat/SNF), and billing payouts.
- Depot Feed Sales Manager: Track cattle feed distribution, inventory levels, and outstanding ledger balances.
State Recognition & Official Launch
The platform's impact on agricultural digitisation was celebrated state-wide. The Doodh platform was officially inaugurated by the Hon. J Chinjurani, Minister of Animal Husbandry, Kerala, during the cooperative society's annual state celebration.

To ensure successful adoption, our design team created detail-oriented download manuals written in Malayalam and hosted on-site training sessions for rural cooperative operators. Doodh scaled from 5 initial users to over 1,000+ daily active users per society.

Key Design Reflections
Building Doodh proved that high-quality design isn't only for sleek, modern metropolitan applications. Designing for agricultural communities taught me that clarity and absolute transparency are the foundation of trust. By stripping away complex UI clutter, honoring physical paper bill paradigms, and accommodating offline edge-cases, we created a tool that fits natively into the daily lives of Kerala's cow farmers.
